Tourisme

Lourdes (Hautes-Pyrénées, France)

Lourdes is first known as a major Catholic pilgrimage site, attracting millions of visitors each year. The town is centered on the Sanctuaire Notre‑Dame de Lourdes and the Grotte de Massabielle, where prayers and processions take place. Outside the religious context, Lourdes offers a lively Pyrenean landscape, walks along the Gave de Pau, and cultural visits in a compact, easy-to-explore setting. It is a destination that combines spirituality, local heritage, and access to the mountains.

Heritage and history

The spiritual heart is the Sanctuaire Notre‑Dame de Lourdes, made up of the Basilique du Rosaire, the Basilique de l’Immaculée‑Conception, and the underground basilica Saint‑Pius‑X. The Grotte de Massabielle remains the central place of devotion. Historically, the Château fort de Lourdes, perched above the town, houses the Musée pyrénéen and tells the traditional life of the valleys.

Nature and landscapes

Lourdes lies at the foot of the Pyrenees, with the green setting of the Gave de Pau and wooded slopes visible from the town. The mountain views are accessible without great effort, and the air is suitable for short hikes and riverside walks.

Outdoor activities and leisure

To change the atmosphere after religious visits, the Pic du Jer — served by a funicular — offers viewpoints and trails. The town also serves as a base for excursions to mountain resorts and Pyrenean passes, hiking and mountain biking depending on the season.

Gastronomy and local products

The local cuisine highlights Pyrenean tradition: you will often find garbure, mountain cheeses, and regional pastries. Markets offer farm products and Occitan specialties.
