Frontignan (Hérault, France)
Frontignan is a coastal town located between Montpellier and Sète, on the edge of the étang de Thau. A port and agricultural town, it long drew its prosperity from salt and vineyards. There is a mix of historic neighborhoods, coastal areas and natural spaces suited to walks. Its position between lagoon and sea makes it a favored stop for nature and food lovers.
Heritage and history
The salt and maritime past remains visible in the urban landscape and surrounding wetlands. Frontignan has retained traces of its salt production and transport activity, as well as a network of old streets near the center. The connection with the Thau basin and fishing shaped local life for centuries.
Nature and landscapes
The étang de Thau dominates the panoramas: vast aquatic plains, oyster farms and reed beds. To the west, the beaches offer direct access to the Mediterranean and views over the lagoon. The salt marshes add changing colors depending on the season and the light intensity.
Gastronomy and wines
Frontignan is famous for its muscat de Frontignan, a traditional sweet wine often paired with desserts. Proximity to the Thau basin allows tasting very fresh oysters and shellfish, served in coastal restaurants or directly by producers.
Outdoor activities
Cycling, walks along the pond and boat outings are common ways to discover the area. Strolls on the quays and beaches suit families as well as nature photography enthusiasts.
