Saint-Jean-de-Luz (Pyrénées-Atlantiques, France)
Saint-Jean-de-Luz is a Basque port town nestled in a sheltered bay between Biarritz and the Spanish border. It combines a coastline of family-friendly beaches with an old town rich in maritime history. The fishing port remains active and still influences local life. The town attracts visitors both for walks along the breakwater and for its royal heritage.
Heritage and history
The Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste is the historical heart: it was there that Louis XIV married Maria Theresa of Austria in 1660, an event that marked the city. Not far away, the Maison de l’Infante preserves traces of that episode and illustrates 17th-century bourgeois architecture. The cobbled streets of the center retain half-timbered facades and former merchants' houses.
Architecture and neighborhoods
Basque houses are recognizable by their red shutters and white bands or green, tile roofs and wooden balconies. The seafront mixes 19th-century villas with functional port buildings. The quay and the sheds still evoke traditional maritime activity.
Nature and outdoor activities
The bay offers safe beaches such as the Grande Plage and Erromardie, suitable for families and beginner surfing. In the hinterland, the mountain La Rhune and nearby ridges offer hikes and panoramic views of the Basque coast. Walks along the corniche and boat outings complete the offer.
Gastronomy
Local cuisine highlights fresh fish from the port and Basque specialties: gâteau basque, pintxos and seafood. Wines from Irouléguy are easily found in restaurants and pair well with briny dishes.
