Cœur de Causse (Lot, France)
The Cœur de Causse refers to the limestone, rural part of the Lot department, characterized by its causse plateaus, small valleys and stone villages. The landscape is shaped by karst: sinkholes, losing streams and combes punctuate the area. Rural heritage is present everywhere: dry-stone farms, low stone walls and cluzeaux bear witness to a long history of livestock farming and agriculture. The atmosphere remains fairly quiet, suitable for walks and observing the Lot countryside.
Nature and landscapes
The limestone plateaus offer open panoramas and poor soils where sheep graze. Karst phenomena create hidden undulations and sometimes chasms and caves open to the public in the area. Spring flora is rich on the dry grasslands and many species adapted to the causses can be observed.
Heritage and architecture
Villages often consist of blonde stone houses, small Romanesque churches and washhouses. Dry-stone walls and traditional farms punctuate the hamlets. Traces of ancient rural habitation are visible in the cluzeaux and old agricultural arrangements.
Gastronomy and local products
Local cuisine relies on terroir products: goat cheeses such as Rocamadour, black truffle seasonally, walnuts and local meats. Markets and small farms offer country products, charcuterie and homemade jams.
