Tourisme

Canet-en-Roussillon (Pyrénées-Orientales, France)

Canet-en-Roussillon is a lively seaside resort on the Catalan coast, located about fifteen kilometres from Perpignan. It is known for a long fine-sand beach and a family-friendly atmosphere in summer. The seafront offers promenades, terraces and services dedicated to water sports. Outside the summer season, the town remains a convenient access point for exploring the Côte Vermeille and the landscapes of Roussillon.

Heritage and history

The town retains traces of its development oriented toward the sea since the 19th century, marked by the rise of seaside tourism. The town centre features villas and period seaside buildings, and the port has modernised its economic and leisure role. There are also elements of local heritage linked to Catalan culture.

Nature and landscapes

The characteristic feature is the long stretch of sand bordered by dunes and a lagoon strip. The Étang de Canet-Saint-Nazaire, behind the beach, offers a wetland environment suitable for birdwatching and tranquil walks. Views of the Mediterranean Sea and, in clear weather, the first foothills of the Pyrénées complete the picture.

Outdoor activities and leisure

Water activities are omnipresent: sailing, paddleboarding, windsurfing and kite-surf schools depending on the season. The Port de Canet welcomes pleasure boaters and fishermen, and the seafront offers cycle paths and pedestrian promenades. Proximity to Perpignan facilitates cultural excursions and local markets.

Gastronomy and wines

Local cuisine highlights Mediterranean products: fish, seafood, and Catalan specialties. Wines from nearby appellations, notably the Côtes du Roussillon, pair well with meals. There are many family-run restaurants and beach restaurants offering simple, fresh dishes.
