Saint-Étienne-au-Mont (Pas-de-Calais, France)
Saint-Étienne-au-Mont is a coastal commune located just south of Boulogne-sur-Mer, on the Côte d'Opale. It features a mix of moorland, dunes and hamlets that give the place a maritime and rural atmosphere. The Écault coastline offers open views over the English Channel and sandy beaches. The village remains discreet, appreciated for its walks and its proximity to the major tourist sites of the Boulonnais.
Heritage and history
The heart of the village retains elements of local architecture and a parish church dedicated to Saint-Étienne, which plays a central role in community life. The area has undergone changes linked to maritime activity and exchanges with nearby Boulogne-sur-Mer. Traces of rural history can be seen in the farms and old tracks that criss-cross the commune.
Nature and landscapes
The Écault area brings together dunes, coastal grasslands and beaches that extend northwards. These spaces encourage walking and the observation of migratory birds when the season allows. Views over the English Channel are wide on clear days, and the transition between cultivated land and the seaside is particularly distinct.
Outdoor activities
Hikes along the coast, bike rides and picnics on the beaches are common activities. The proximity of Boulogne-sur-Mer allows alternating between seaside relaxation and visits (aquarium, port), without straying from the calm of Saint-Étienne-au-Mont.
Not to miss
- Plage de l'Écault: sand and dunes for walking and resting.
