Houlgate (Calvados, France)
Houlgate is a seaside resort on the Côte Fleurie, set on a long fine-sand beach facing the English Channel. The town developed around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and retains a character marked by villas from that era. The seafront offers a family-friendly atmosphere, suitable for swimming in summer and for walks outside the season. The proximity of the Dives estuary and nearby towns like Cabourg makes it a convenient starting point for exploring the area.
Heritage and architecture
Houlgate’s urban landscape is dominated by Belle Époque villas with bow windows and bow terraces, lined along the avenues. The streets reveal ornate façades, wrought-iron balconies and typical roof tiles, evidence of the town’s early tourism boom. Urban planning preserves green spaces and promenades that respect the spirit of the place.
Nature and landscapes
The sandy beach stretches for kilometers, framed by dunes and a pine wood that separate the village from the coast. The landscape changes with the tides: wide foreshore at low tide, sandbanks and shifting light. A short walk away, the Dives estuary is popular for birdwatching and nature walks.
Outdoor activities and leisure
The seafront invites walking, cycling on coastal paths and beach games. There are facilities for the summer season and family entertainment. Leisure seekers enjoy sunset walks on the sand or under the pines.
