Description

The motorhome area of Yssingeaux, located at the municipal campsite/Choumouroux area, offers waste disposal, water supply, electrical hook-ups and parking in a welcoming setting. Yssingeaux, the “city of five roosters”, is surrounded by numerous sucs — sugarloaf-shaped volcanoes — which invite hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding on panoramic trails where volcanic rock supports remarkable flora and a great diversity of butterflies. Nearby, water activities and swimming are possible, as well as a leisure-aquatic center; on Thursday mornings in summer the town center market becomes one of the department's largest and a local producers' market takes place on Sundays (market gardening, berries, cured meats, brioches and “douceurs des sucs”). Access to the area is managed 24/7 by a machine issuing a QR code that guarantees your spot on return; in season the area welcomes caravans, motorhomes and campers with open sanitary facilities, off-season only self-contained vehicles are allowed. A bus network connects Yssingeaux to Le Puy-en-Velay and Saint-Étienne to facilitate your travels.

Tourisme

Yssingeaux (Haute-Loire, France)

Yssingeaux is a medium-sized town nestled in the south of the Haute-Loire, at the meeting point between volcanic uplands and river valleys. Its urban core preserves traces of medieval development and a lively commercial life. The position between the plateau du Devès and the Mézenc slopes makes the commune a convenient starting point for exploring the Velay. The town remains lively with markets and local events throughout the year.

Heritage and history

Yssingeaux’s center shows an old urban layout, with narrow streets and sober facades that reflect its commercial past. Public buildings that have shaped local life for centuries are easily noticeable. Local history is often referenced on panels or during occasional guided tours organized by the town hall or heritage associations.

Nature and landscapes

The Lignon valley crosses the town and provides a striking landscape feature. To the east, the plateau du Devès opens onto basaltic land, offering wide views and summer pastures. At a reasonable distance, the Mézenc massif and surrounding hills attract hikers seeking ancient volcanoes and grassy ridges.

Outdoor activities

Yssingeaux serves as a base for hiking, mountain biking and fishing in the Lignon. Local trails suit family outings or longer stages toward volcanic ridges. Municipal sports facilities also provide equipment for daily activities.

Gastronomy

Local cuisine highlights products from the Massif central: nearby Puy lentils, charcuterie and regional cheeses. Markets allow meeting producers and artisans and buying seasonal products.

Not to miss

  • Historic center: stroll the streets and read the old facades.
  • Lignon: riverside walks and fishing.
  • Weekly market: local products and a commercial atmosphere.
  • Plateau du Devès / Mézenc: viewpoints and hikes.
  • MTB routes: waymarked loops around the commune.
