Albi (Tarn, France)
Albi immediately stands out for its red hue, due to the bricks that dominate the old town. Situated on a bend of the Tarn, it retains a compact silhouette where ecclesiastical history and medieval streets remain alive. The city has combined major monuments with contemporary uses: museums, terraces and riverside walks. Its historic center is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the title Episcopal City of Albi.
Heritage and history
The urban landscape is dominated by the Sainte-Cécile Cathedral, a brick fortress cathedral whose richly decorated interior surprises with its paintings and vault. Beside it, the Palais de la Berbie long housed episcopal authority; it now contains heritage collections and gardens from which the view over the Tarn is remarkable. The organization as an episcopal quarter illustrates the city's religious power in the medieval and modern periods.
Architecture and urban landscape
Albi offers coherent architecture: brick houses, slate roofs and narrow streets of Old Albi. The Pont Vieux, crossing the Tarn, connects the bank to the tree-lined quays. The ochre and red façades give the light a warm aspect, visible especially at sunset along the banks.
Culture and museums
The Toulouse‑Lautrec Museum, housed in the Palais de la Berbie, preserves the largest public collection of works by the artist born in Albi. The museum also highlights regional arts and hosts temporary exhibitions that complement a visit to the city.
Gastronomy and wines
The region around Albi is close to the Gaillac appellation, whose wines can be found in restaurants and at local wine shops. Tarn cuisine emphasizes farm products, charcuterie and hearty dishes served in the center's bistros.
