Description

Welcome to the La Ronde pleasure boat area, at Bazoin: a fixed wooden pontoon 60 m by 2 m, equipped with two utility pedestals providing electrical connection and potable water supply directly at the quay. Located at the heart of the main hydraulic junction of the Marais poitevin, this site marks the meeting of four waterways — the historic arrival of the Sèvre Niortaise (collecting the Vieille Autise), the Nouveau Béjou canal (born just downstream of Damvix) sharing its mouth with the Vieux Béjou, and the confluence of the Mignon — in a characteristic tangle of water arms and spits of land. The toponym Bazoin (or Bazouin) — possibly from “bada” (mud) + “onno” (watercourse) — denotes this hamlet shaped by hydraulic works, with several farms and the lockkeeper’s house near the Nouveau Béjou weir. Local life, essentially agricultural and artisanal, revolves around the boat: itinerant traders travel to the site from Damvix and Maillé, a school based in Damvix is jointly maintained with Maillé and La Ronde. Note, however: the site is regularly isolated by winter and spring floods, where towing-path footbridges and crossings of the weirs remain narrow and precarious — the boat is then indispensable.

Tourisme

La Ronde (Charente-Maritime, France)

La Ronde is a small rural commune in the north of Charente-Maritime, set in a countryside of bocage and fields. The village consists of a discreet small town, hamlets and bocage enclosures, where agricultural life remains present. The secondary roads invite a slow pace: walks on foot or by bike make it possible to grasp the local identity. You will find a peaceful atmosphere, suited to short nature stays and the discovery of rural heritage.

Heritage and history

The village retains traces of traditional rural architecture: stone houses, boundary walls and an old parish church that marks the heart of the village. The whole reflects a dispersed settlement typical of northern Charente-Maritime. Local records and buildings reveal a history linked to agriculture and small rural lordships rather than to large monuments.

Nature and landscapes

The surrounding landscape is dominated by the Charente bocage, an alternation of hedges, meadows and small cultivated plots. These landscapes offer changing views according to the seasons and encourage the observation of countryside biodiversity. Rural paths are suited to gentle hikes and birdwatching outings.

Outdoor activities and getaways

La Ronde often serves as a starting point for bike outings or family walks. At a short distance, one can join longer routes towards Saint-Jean-d'Angély and the surrounding wetlands. The markets and small farms nearby offer local products, easily accessible during half-day excursions.
